response prevention (ERP)

Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy used to gradually confront and conquer your fears. It is an evidence-based technique that is highly effective for OCD. It works because when you are exposed to anything with enough frequency, you eventually habituate to it, which means ‘to acclimate to’ or ‘get used to’ something. Through a willingness to experience discomfort and uncertainty, you can weaken the grip that OCD has over you and decrease the associated anxiety, guilt, and distress it causes.

How We Approach Treatment
We don’t dive into your biggest fears on day one. ERP is a collaborative, step-by-step process tailored to your specific experience.

  • Understanding Your Triggers: We identify the "obsessions" (intrusive thoughts, images, urges, feelings, or sensations) and the "compulsions" (the behaviors or mental rituals you use to feel safe).

  • Building a Hierarchy: Together, we create a list of challenges, starting with the least distressing and slowly working our way up as you gain confidence.

  • Active Exposure: You will gradually lean into the situations that trigger your anxiety in a controlled, supportive environment.

  • Response Prevention: The "RP" in ERP is the most vital part. I will guide you in resisting the urge to perform compulsions, teaching your brain that the "danger" isn't real and that you can handle the discomfort without the compulsive ritual.

Moving Toward Freedom
OCD thrives on the need for 100% certainty, which is a standard that is impossible to meet. ERP doesn't just reduce symptoms; it builds psychological resilience. By learning to tolerate the "maybe," you gain the freedom to focus on what truly matters to you, rather than what OCD demands.
